Retail worker rights: Sunday work, pay and holiday

Shop workers can opt out of Sunday working, and are entitled to at least the minimum wage and paid holiday.

Sunday working

Shop workers can opt out of working on Sundays, unless Sunday is the only day they were employed to work. You give your employer 3 months' notice, and you can't be dismissed or treated unfairly for opting out (GOV.UK: Sunday working).

Minimum wage

The National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage rates go up every April and depend on your age. Check the current rates on GOV.UK.

Holiday

Most workers are entitled to paid holiday, including people on part-time, seasonal and irregular hours. See GOV.UK: holiday entitlement.

Age-restricted sales

You'll often check ID for items such as alcohol, tobacco, vapes and knives. Your employer should train you on its policy, and you can always refuse a sale if you're not sure.

Adjustments

If you're disabled or have a health condition, you can ask the employer for adjustments at any stage of applying, including in a screening.
